1. Can I take more than 10 SaltStick Caps or 15 SaltStick Caps Plus per day?
The suggested limit for SaltStick Caps intake is ten (10) per day and SaltStick Caps Plus, 15 per day. However, the intensity, duration, and/or heat associated with a particular activity may warrant the intake of additional SaltStick caps. Moreover, each athlete possesses unique personal and biological requirements for optimum electrolyte replacement. These factors, among others, should be carefully considered by the individual athlete in consultation with his/her physician to determine whether it is appropriate to exceed the suggested SaltStick cap intake.

2. Is this product safe to use by pregnant women?
SaltStick Caps and Caps Plus should be used by pregnant women only under the advice or supervision of their physician, as part of their exercise program.

3. Can children use SaltStick Caps?
The suggested usage of SaltStick is for adults over the age of 18. However, the intensity, duration, and/or heat associated with a particular activity may warrant the intake of SaltStick Caps by other athletic populations. Each athlete possesses unique personal and biological requirements for optimum electrolyte replacement. These factors, among others, should be carefully considered by the individual athlete in consultation with his/her physician to determine whether it is appropriate to use SaltStick Caps.

4. Are the capsule bottles BPA free?
The PET bottles used for SaltStick Caps and SaltStick Caps Plus are BPA and phthalate free. They are tested and certified for use for food products.

5. Is the SaltStick dispenser plastic safe to touch food?
Yes, food-grade plastic is used in the making of the dispenser.

6. Are SaltStick products vegetarian? Vegan?
SaltStick Caps are vegetarian in that they do not contain any meat or meat products. The magnesium stearate and stearic acid used in small amounts in SaltStick Caps for the encapsulation process are derived from vegetable sources. The L-leucine in SaltStick Caps Plus is a purified amino acid originally derived from duck feathers. The vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) used in both products is a pure ingredient, originally derived from an animal source, and is the same material that our bodies synthesize in sunlight. Therefore both products are vegetarian in that they do not contain meat or processed animal parts but do contain ingredients of animal origin and are therefore not considered strictly vegan.

7. Are SaltStick products gluten-free? Lactose-free?
Yes, they are gluten-free and lactose-free. The capsule is made from the natural cellulose polymer “hypromellose” The contents also do not contain any wheat, corn, soy, milk, whey, nor egg products.

8. Are SaltStick products nut-free? shellfish-free?
SaltStick products are made in a facility that makes a variety of other products. The facility adheres to Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) regulations that specify storage, equipment cleaning, and documentation standards, among other attributes. The facility does not process fish/shellfish/or nuts within the facility, however, ingredients sourced from fish such as fish oil & powder; shellfish such as glucosamine; and nuts such as walnut hull and almond oil are used within the facility for other products. However, the facility has allergen policy in place, and they do segregate these ingredients in the specified area. SaltStick products are not handled or produced within that area. If you have a severe allergy and despite this information, you should consider using the products under the supervision of a physician or with appropriate treatment (EpiPen, etc…) available if you have ongoing concerns.

9. Is there any sugar in SaltStick products?
No sugar, no high fructose corn syrup (HFCS), no sweeteners of any kind. SaltStick Caps and SaltStick Caps Plus contain zero calories.

10. Are the products GMO-free?
Yes, the cellulose capsules are certified GMO-free. No other ingredients would fall under GMO or non-GMO origin.

11. Are SaltStick Caps Kosher?
No, there is no Kosher certification or supervision on the SaltStick products currently.

12. Is there any source of carbohydrates in SaltStick?
No. The capsule material is considered as a non-absorbable carbohydrate and does not provide any nutritional value. The contents have no carbohydrates including sugars, lactose, fructose.

Dispenser: Product Usage

1. What’s the benefit of the SaltStick dispenser?
The dispenser provides for easy, convenient, and one handed dispensing of any capsule product method during workouts or training. It can be installed within many aerobar assemblies, attaches externally to bicycles, backpacks and running belts. The dispenser is a proven way to ensure your nutrition is dry, clean and easily accessible.

2. Will the SaltStick Dispenser fit inside my aerobars?
The SaltStick Dispenser will fit inside many aerobars that have an empty void, usually covered with plastic caps. To fit inside the bars, a 5.1″ (130mm) straight run is required and a diameter of 0.6″ (15mm). View an image gallery here.

3. Will the SaltStick Mini Dispenser fit inside my road bars?
The SaltStick Dispenser will fit inside many road bars that have an empty void, usually covered with plastic caps. To fit inside the bars, a 3.3″ (84mm)straight run is required and a diameter of 0.6″ (15mm). If the road bars have significant ergonomic bends, there is a good chance the SaltStick Mini will not fit inside the bar ends, and would need to be mounted externally, in which case the SaltStick Dispenser (6 capsule model) is recommended. Fastchews: Product Usage

1. Can Fastchews be dissolved in water to create a sports drink?
We don’t recommend it. While it’s technically acceptable, the tablet was formulated to be enjoyed by eating directly. It is not very soluble in water, unlike effervescent tablets that are designed only for dissolution in water. If that is your desired use, we suggest trying a product dedicated to that application, such as SaltStick Elixalyte™, a liquid concentrate where one serving (5 mL) approximately equals the electrolytes in one capsule of SaltStick Caps.

2. How many Fastchews equals one SaltStick capsule? Why is the concentration lower?
Approximately 4 Fastchews equals 1 SaltStick Cap, and all 4 electrolytes are scaled accordingly. The amount of electrolytes is lower in Fastchews to ensure a delicious taste and the ability for athletes to customize their nutrition delivery in smaller doses.

3. How should Fastchews be stored?
Unopened bottles or packets of Fastchews should generally be stored at room temperature and under dry conditions for longest shelf life. Opened bottles or packets should be kept sealed and used as soon as practical.

4. What happens if Fastchews get wet?
Fastchews will be affected by moisture as salt tends to absorb moisture from the air, eventually causing the tablet to fall apart. This is a cosmetic change, not a safety issue, but from a practical standpoint, the tablet won’t be as easy to consume. Sealed packets or bottles of Fastchews are moisture-resistant and should survive exposure to sweat and moisture during exercise. Always best to keep the product dry.

5. Do I need to take Fastchews with water?
No. Fastchews can be consumed with or without water, depending on personal preference and on circumstances. You will still need some source of hydration over time, but you can drink when you need fluid, and take Fastchews when you need electrolytes, not necessarily at the same moment.

6. Can I suck on Fastchews or do I need to chew and swallow?
Certainly! You will absorb electrolytes quickly through buccal tissue (inside your mouth, under your tongue) so if you prefer, you can keep Fastchews in your mouth until it dissolves fully. The choice is yours.

7. Why isn’t there vitamin D in Fastchews as there is in SaltStick Caps and Caps Plus?
Fastchews were formulated without vitamin D as it reduced the shelf life of the product and vitamin D has found its way into many sports nutrition products so its extra addition was deemed unnecessary for most cases. If you or your physician determine that addition of vitamin D is helpful, we suggest using SaltStick Caps or Caps Plus, or adding a specific vitamin D supplement.

8. Why is sodium citrate used rather than sodium chloride?
Sodium citrate is a “performance” source of the electrolyte sodium that is easy to absorb and helps to soothe the stomach, as well as tasting less “salty” than table salt (sodium chloride). It is the same sodium source that is used in SaltStick Caps Plus.

9. What are the other ingredients listed used for? Are they safe?
In addition to the salts of sodium, potassium, magnesium and calcium, Fastchews contains the following ingredients that are used for the indicated purpose. All ingredients are “Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS)” and have been used extensively in foods and supplements for many years and have excellent safety profiles.
Dextrates: It is composed of glucose monohydrate and different polysaccharides derived from starch. Non-GMO origin. Used as a binder to form the bulk of the tablet. Slightly sweet taste, and the source of the 4 calories per tablet.
Dextrose: A form of glucose (sugar). Non-GMO origin. Used in trace amounts to provide texture and binding.
Citric acid: A natural preservative from citrus fruits, provides a “bite” in the mouth like sour candies.
Natural flavour: A proprietary mixture based on lemon-lime or orange natural flavouring. The orange flavour mixture contains a tiny trace amount of lactose. The lemon-lime is lactose-free.
Stearic acid: A waxy, natural fatty acid sourced from vegetable fat used as a solid lubricant to assist with tablet formation and compression.
Crospovidone: A cross linked polyvinyl N-pyrrolidone, is a common, FDA-approved inactive ingredient used as a disintegrant in tablets making Fastchews chewable.
Malic acid: Naturally present in many fruit, malic acid is used here to provide the pleasantly sour taste of fruit to help mask the salty electrolyte taste. Malic acid is also an important component in our body’s energy production cycle.
Silica: Silicon dioxide (sand) is naturally-occurring and used as an anti-caking agent and glidant to allow powder to flow freely when tablets are processed.
Magnesium stearate: A natural salt sourced from vegetable oil and used as a solid lubricant to assist with tablet formation and compression.
Stevia extract: Isolated from the Stevia rebaudiana plant, provides natural sweetness to the overall formulation.

10. Are Fastchews vegan or vegetarian?
Orange Fastchews contain a tiny trace amount of lactose in the natural flavour blend, making this product suitable for vegetarians. Lemon-Lime, Seedless Watermelon and Perfectly Peach Fastchews do not contain any ingredients of animal origin and would be suitable for vegan diets.

11. Are Fastchews non-GMO?
Out of an abundance of caution, we have carefully sourced all non-GMO ingredients whenever the possibility of GMO exist for a given ingredient. Only plant-based ingredients (not minerals) have GMO/non-GMO varieties, and so only the non-GMO versions have been used. We should state, however, we are not aware of any scientific studies that have demonstrated any difference between GMO and non-GMO ingredients on human health or outcome of disease, and so we have used non-GMO ingredients to satisfy the consumer population seeking such products.

12. Are Fastchews gluten-free?
Yes, Fastchews have been formulated with ingredients that specifically contain no gluten.

13. Are Fastchews considered organic?
No, Fastchews contain ingredients that are considered to be both from organic and non-organic agriculture practices. Due to lack of availability, not all ingredients could be sourced organically, but where possible, organic ingredients were used.

14. Is there colour added?
No colour has been added to Fastchews. It’s not needed. This means that both the orange and lemon-lime tablets are white! But you can tell the difference by their distinct smell from the natural flavouring.

15. Are Fastchews Kosher?
We do not have official Kosher certification, but since the products are vegetarian, they are likely suitable for a Kosher diet. Note that the orange flavour contains a tiny trace amount of lactose.

16. Are Fastchews steroid and banned substance free?
Yes, Fastchews have been carefully formulated not to contain any banned substances. Furthermore, Fastchews are tested by an independent 3rd party to carryout testing on batches of product to further ensure athlete safety.

17. Can Fastchews be used to help a hangover?
In our experience, proper hydration (with water) and electrolyte intake are key to avoid the dehydrating effects of alcohol that contribute to hangover symptoms. SaltStick Fastchews and SaltStick Caps can be used to help replace the electrolytes lost. We can’t claim that Fastchews will cure hangovers, but you won’t be disappointed!

18. Are Fastchews suitable for children and youth sports?
Yes! Fastchews have been formulated to be safe for children when used under parental supervision. Fastchews, when paired with water, provide a convenient and healthy alternative to sugar-laden sports drinks.

19. What is the recommended dose?
The suggested use of Fastchews is 2 tablets (1 serving) per 15-30 minutes. Individual usage will vary, and consumers will be best served by testing out their usage under various conditions.

20. What is the maximum dose per day?
The suggested maximum dose per day for adults is 50 tablets. This represents 100% of standard sodium RDA (based on a 2000 calorie diet). Individuals may find they are limited to fewer tablets than the suggested maximum.

21. Can Fastchews be used for other sports and activities?
Yes! Fastchews can be used for all sports and activities that may cause a loss of electrolytes or where fluid is consumed. This can include tennis, football, water sports, rock climbing, hiking, gardening, and walking.

22. My Fastchews show some brown spots of discolouration. What’s wrong?
With humidity and in warmer conditions, the ingredients in Fastchews (sugars and amino acids) can react in the Maillard reaction to create white and brown spots. This is similar to the reaction that give browned foods their flavour and the process of coffee roasting and toasting bread. It’s harmless and while unsightly, does not actually affect the performance or safety of Fastchews. We continue to monitor the analytics and stability of the product over time. We suggest keeping the unused product in cool and dry conditions to avoid this possible issue.

23. Why is there lactose in Orange Fastchews?
Lactose is present in minute trace amounts in the natural orange flavour mix used to flavour Orange Fastchews. The quantity is tiny, but those with an allergy to lactose should refrain from using the orange flavoured product. That is why the package has an allergen warning. The lemon-lime flavour does not contain lactose.

What is Elixalyte^™?
SaltStick^® Elixalyte^™ is the first concentrated electrolyte add-in with all 4 major electrolytes. Elixalyte features a scientifically-derived, proprietary high-performance formulation that provides a balanced supply of bioavailable sodium, potassium, magnesium, and calcium. Sodium is derived from sodium citrate, a proven source that has the added benefit of soothing the stomach. The formulation mirrors the electrolyte profile lost in sweat, in a form and quantity the body can absorb. Its non-GMO ingredients are all natural, gluten-free, vegan, and without artificial sweeteners or colours.

Why use Elixalyte^™?
This is a product that provides an additional delivery option for individuals who seek to consume additional electrolytes. What is the maximum dose per day?

What does it taste like?

Why doesn’t Elixalyte contain Vitamin D?
Studies have proven that vitamin D assists with calcium absorption, which is why it’s in our capsule products, however,  due to the limited stability of vitamin D in a liquid format, we have opted to ensure long-term stability and matching our label claims by excluding vitamin D from this formulation. We suggest users consider alternative dedicated vitamin D sources for increased vitamin D supplementation.

What if I get Elixalyte in my eyes or on my skin?
Flush with water until no longer irritated. The salt and citric acid will sting eyes and skin like sea water. Seek medical attention if necessary.

How should Elixalyte be stored?
Store contents in a cool (room temperature or below) environment. Keep bottle lid closed.

What color is Elixalyte?
Elixalyte concentrate is a white milky liquid. Once diluted into a beverage, the solution may remain slightly cloudy. This is completely normal. Ensuring proper mixing (shaking) will properly distribute the product within your drink.

I see a cloudy solution. Is that normal?
Yes, Elixalyte creates a suspension within your beverage and correctly delivers electrolytes upon consumption. Just make sure you’ve properly mixed/shaken during preparation.

What is xanthan gum and why is it in Elixalyte?
Xanthan gum is a GRAS material (generally recognized as safe by US FDA and other authorities worldwide). It’s used in Elixalyte as a gelling agent, to keep the minerals in a homogeneous suspension and ready for dilution.

Why is there citric acid in Elixalyte?
Citric acid provides the acidity to assist with preservation against bacterial growth. As well, citric acid is an important part of the Krebs energy cycle and can be a beneficial ingredient in our cells to assist with energy production. Citric acid also works with sodium citrate as a buffering agent, that stabilizes against pH changes in blood.

Is Elixalyte better than other SaltStick products?
Each SaltStick product has its utility. The particular benefit of Elixalyte is its versatility to fortify your favorite sports drink, and for those individuals who may have difficulty swallowing capsules (SaltStick Caps and Caps Plus) or chewing tablets (Fastchews). Elixalyte delivers about the same amount of electrolytes per serving (5 mL) as a serving (1 capsule) of SaltStick Caps or Caps Plus.

Why is sodium citrate used instead of sodium chloride? What is wrong with “salt”?
Sodium citrate is a source of the important electrolyte sodium in a form that is readily available to the body, while at the same time, soothes the stomach. For individuals with sensitive stomachs, especially during intense exercise, sodium citrate is an ideal source of sodium as compared with sodium chloride (table salt). As well, sodium citrate tastes “less salty” and makes for an ideal powdered supplement to add to create a custom electrolyte beverage. It is a more expensive ingredient and therefore products with this material may cost more. Sodium citrate is one of the active ingredients in the antacid “Alka-Seltzer” and hence soothes the stomach while supplying sodium for electrolyte replacement. Also, some athletes have found that the chloride present in sodium chloride (table salt) can irritate the stomach. Both sodium chloride and sodium citrate are easily absorbed into the body.

Does Elixalyte contain heavy metals and trace minerals?
No. Since all our ingredients are pure minerals formulated into pure water, you will not be consuming 60+ trace minerals, potentially including naturally-occurring heavy metals and untested ingredients. What is listed ON the label is what’s INSIDE the bottle. Nothing more and nothing less.

Is Elixalyte vegan or vegetarian?

Both potassium sorbate and sodium benzoate are GRAS materials, which are generally recognized as safe by the US FDA and other worldwide authorities. They are also naturally present in many foods and widely used in other supplements and products.

What is the shelf life of Elixalyte?
Each bottle is stamped with an expiry date that is 2 years from the date of manufacture. We also suggest using the product within 6 months of opening to reduce the chance of bacterial growth. If you notice an off-colour or odor, it is probably best to discard the product.

Is Elixalyte safe for children under 18?
Children under 18 should use Elixalyte under adult supervision. As with any dietary supplement, we always suggest following guidelines under adult supervision, and to introduce to smaller individuals at lower doses.

Vitassium: Product Usage

1. What is Vitassium?

SaltStick Vitassium is specifically formulated to provide sodium and potassium as part of the dietary management for patients with autonomic dysfunction including Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS), Ehlers Danlos Syndrome (EDS), Cystic Fibrosis (CF), and Vasovagal Syncope, when increased plasma volume has been shown to be beneficial. Vitassium helps to maintain electrolyte levels, to support healthy blood pressure, and to reduce fatigue and dizziness due to low blood pressure.

2. My doctor told me to take salt tablets. Does that mean just salt?
“Salt” is usually considered to be Table Salt, which is chemically known as Sodium Chloride. By weight, sodium chloride contains about 40% sodium. Nutrition information on foods is always indicated as the mineral sodium. For example, 1 gram of salt (1000 milligrams) contains 400 mg of sodium. If your physician suggests taking 1g of salt, then you can consume either 1g of table salt, or 400mg of sodium as indicated on food labels. Vitassium contains 250mg of sodium per capsule, or 500mg sodium per 2 capsule serving. This equals 635mg salt per capsule or 1270mg salt per 2 capsule serving.  Consult our chart below for more information.

3. Why use Vitassium rather than SaltStick Caps or Fastchews?
Vitassium was formulated specifically as a medical food for individuals seeking to increase sodium intake under physician supervision. SaltStick Caps and Fastchews were formulated for athletes seeking to replace electrolytes lost in sweat, which includes significant amounts of sodium and potassium. However, we recommend using the product that was engineered for the specific purpose, although both products can be used together if desired. Vitassium capsules are also more concentrated and smaller, making them easier to consume than SaltStick Caps, especially for smaller individuals.

4. Is it standard for “salt tablets” to contain other electrolytes?
“Salt” tablets usually contain only sodium chloride, common table salt. The salt is commonly mined or harvested from salt water, and then purified. Trace quantities of other minerals, such as potassium, manganese, zinc and others can be found in natural sources of salt, but the quantities are so small that in the context of a normal diet, are not necessarily helpful. Vitassium contains purified sodium chloride (salt) that is 99.9% pure. Vitassium also contains significant potassium, that helps balance the electrolyte content in the body, between plasma and inside cells. Most salt tablets do not contain potassium.

5. My doctor suggested I take x grams of salt per day. How many Vitassium capsules should I consume?
1 gram of salt (1000 milligrams) contains 400 mg of sodium. Vitassium contains 250mg of sodium per capsule, or 500mg sodium per 2 capsule serving. This equals 635mg salt per capsule or 1270mg salt per 2 capsule serving.  See Vitassium FAQ #2 for more details.

6. Can Vitassium be consumed on an ongoing daily basis?
Yes, given the safety profile of the common and safe ingredients, sodium chloride and potassium citrate, as part of a normal diet and with regular hydration, ongoing use as a daily medical food should be well tolerated. If you have specific concerns, please consult with your physician.

7. Should I take Vitassium alone without balancing other electrolytes?
Vitassium contains a concentrated balance of buffered sodium and potassium. Other electrolyte intake through a normal and varied diet are necessary for proper mineral intake. For the purpose of electrolyte supplementation, the Vitassium composition is ideal. For athletes, we recommend SaltStick Caps or Caps Plus that contain magnesium and calcium in addition, in line with electrolyte losses by sweating.

8. Will taking this product long term cause other electrolyte imbalances?
Vitassium contains a balanced mixture of sodium and potassium. If you have any specific individualized concerns on electrolyte balance, please consult with your physician.

9. Does Vitassium upset the stomach?
Vitassium has been shown to be easy on the stomach according to our testers and long history of use by the similar SaltStick Caps product. Unlike salt tablets that can cause point-irritation in the stomach, capsules cause less stomach distress. Of course, individual results may vary.

10. Why is there potassium in Vitassium capsules?
Potassium is critical in the body for a variety of biochemical processes. One important function of potassium is to regulate the balance of water between plasma (blood) and within the cell. Providing sufficient building blocks for the body to self-regulate can be important. Vitassium contains an appropriate amount of potassium to assist in that regard. In general, excess potassium would be excreted in the urine.

14. Is Vitassium for athletes? What is the difference between Vitassium and other SaltStick products?
Vitassium is not designed for athletes. Lacking other essential minerals commonly lost in sweat, magnesium and calcium, Vitassium was formulated for individuals who are seeking to increase their intake primarily of sodium, under the guidance of their physician. Our other products, SaltStick Caps, SaltStick Caps Plus and SaltStick Fastchews are better options for athletes or those in hot conditions who lose a significant amount of sweat.

15. Are Vitassium capsules the same size as SaltStick Caps?
No. Vitassium capsules are smaller size “0” that are easier to consume than the larger SaltStick Caps size “00” capsules. Both products should be consumed with water.

16. What type of allergens are present in Vitassium? Is there corn, soy, etc?
Vitassium is non-GMO, vegan, gluten free, preservative free, allergen free, starch free.

17. Does Vitassium contain caffeine?

19. Why is there vegetarian stearic acid? Is that safe?
Stearic acid is used as a solid lubricant that’s helpful during the encapsulation process. It is on the GRAS (Generally recognized as safe) list in the USA that has been used safely for many years in many products. In fact, chocolate contains a large amount of stearic acid naturally, as do other food products. It is present in a very small quantity in Vitassium. It is specifically sourced from a vegetarian source.

20. Are the vegetable capsules really made from vegetables?
Hypromellose is a solid, non-toxic cellulose material derived from plants (wood/cotton fiber). There is no starch or corn present. Hypromellose is suitable for those following vegan and vegetarian diets.

21. How many Vitassium capsules should I take?
As a medical food, you should follow your physician’s recommendations. In general, take one to two (1-2) capsules with water, three to four (3-4) times a day, for up to ten (10) capsules daily.

CAUTION: Do not exceed the recommended dose unless advised by your physician. Consult a physician before using this product, especially if you are a pregnant or nursing mother, a child under 18, or an individual with a known medical condition. Individuals with hypertension, chronic renal insufficiency, diabetes, or those on a low potassium or low-salt diet should not use this product without physician guidance.

22. How should Vitassium capsules be stored?
Store contents in a cool (room temperature or below) and dry environment.

23. Do Vitassium capsules expire?
Yes, the expiration date, as printed with the lot number on the bottom of the bottle or on the packet, is 3 years (bottle) or 4 years (packet) from date of manufacture, based on stability studies, we can confirm that the mineral content (label claim) is within legal requirements within the validity date period, provided the product is stored as indicated.

Science & Product Questions

1. Why should I care about electrolyte loss? Give me a brief summary!
Sweat contains principally water and electrolytes (mostly sodium). One major cause of muscle cramping is due to low electrolyte levels in blood. The longer the duration of the activity, the greater the fluid, caloric and electrolyte loss, and therefore the greater the importance to follow some strategy to replace components in all 3 categories.
Proper electrolyte supplementation prior to, and throughout your event, along with appropriate fluid intake, is key to avoiding cramps and performing your best. A balanced supply of absorbable sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium is your best weapon against cramping. With those electrolytes lost in a 220-63-16-8 ratio for the average athlete, it is in the athlete’s best interest to ensure that replacement of the full spectrum of electrolytes is replaced, and in a form and quantity the body can absorb, such as that provided conveniently in a SaltStick Capsule.
To determine your sweat rate, there are various methods listed online that basically have you measure your weight loss during an activity that will then equal your sweat loss. (For example, Runners World – Know thy sweat rate) Determination of electrolyte loss in sweat requires more scientific testing since the concentration of electrolytes in sweat varies between people. Heavy sweaters tend to find themselves covered in white salt if they wear darker clothing, and the sweat will taste very salty, stinging eyes, etc… Lighter sweaters tend not to notice any salt loss and overall sweat rates tend to be low, keeping clothing dry.
As a general guideline, for light sweaters or smaller individuals, consider 1 SaltStick Cap per hour. For heavy sweaters, larger individuals, or in hotter conditions, consider 2-3 SaltStick Caps per hour. The best strategy for success is to practice your nutrition strategy during training so you can optimize for what works for you, and then execute that during racing. 2. Do SaltStick products contain any prohibited substances?
No. Every lot of SaltStick Caps is tested by an independent lab for prohibited substances. None of our competitors can say that. This is one of the reasons that countless professional athletes use SaltStick. 3. How do SaltStick Caps compare with the World Health Organization (WHO) oral rehydration solution (ORS) formula?
The WHO ORS is a powder added to water or a ready-to-drink fluid with ingredients of glucose, sodium and potassium. Glucose, a simple sugar, acts as an energy source. Sodium and potassium help replace electrolytes in blood. The WHO ORS is more of a survival aid, not a performance aid, and can be useful in field hospitals or settings where providing a patient with fluid, glucose and electrolytes is time-critical. The sodium content is very concentrated, equal to approximately 8 SaltStick Caps in a liter of water (1700mg/L), and tastes very salty. There is no magnesium or calcium in the WHO solution. SaltStick Caps contains no glucose and a scientific blend of all 4 electrolytes, and the capsule provides a tasteless and convenient dosage format, and allows customization of the energy source during exercise. Each product has been designed for different purposes, and while the WHO ORS can be used by athletes as well, it is not purpose-engineered for that population.

4. Which SaltStick capsule product is right for me? SaltStick Caps or SaltStick Caps Plus?

5. Is this product safe to take if you are watching your salt intake? What if I have high blood pressure?
If you are on a sodium-restricted diet, then it would probably be best to consult your physician when considering the use SaltStick products. As a concentrated electrolyte source, the products contain sodium. Each capsule of SaltStick Caps contains 215mg sodium and each capsule of SaltStick Caps Plus contains 190mg sodium. As part of an exercise regimen, these products have a specific and worthwhile purpose to replace lost electrolytes. They are not designed to become part of a normal diet as regular daily intake of food provides sufficient electrolytes for normal daily activities. It is worthwhile to note that only a small percentage of the population will actually react to dietary sodium with higher blood pressure. Large-scale scientific reviews have determined there’s no reason for people with normal blood pressure to restrict their sodium intake. If you already have high blood pressure, you may be “salt sensitive.” As a result, reducing the amount of salt you eat could be helpful. It’s also been known for the past 20 years that people with high blood pressure who don’t want to lower their salt intake can simply consume more potassium-containing foods. Why? Because it’s really the balance of the two minerals that matters. In fact, Dutch researchers determined that a low potassium intake has the same impact on your blood pressure as high salt consumption does. 6. Why do I need more than just sodium?
Five electrolytes in particular play a pivotal role in maintaining normal human muscle function: sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, and chloride. 7. Why do I need potassium?
Potassium is the primary electrolyte located inside the body’s cells (intracellular) and stored in muscle fibers along with glycogen. It plays a critical role by helping transport glucose into the muscle cell. Potassium also interacts with both sodium and chloride to control fluid and electrolyte balance and assists in the conduction of nerve impulses. When glycogen breaks down to supply energy for your workouts, muscle cells are depleted of potassium. As a result, there is a greater concentration of potassium in your blood and greater quantities are lost in sweat and urine. Potassium deficiency symptoms are nausea, slower reflexes, vomiting, muscle weakness, muscle spasms, cramping, and rapid heart rate. 8. What are the ingredients of SaltStick Caps and Caps Plus?

9. Hyponatremia: What is it, and how does it occur?
Hyponatremia is a medical condition marked by low blood sodium levels, can lead to nausea, fatigue, cramping, vomiting, weakness, sleepiness, and in rare severe cases, even death. Among other causes, hyponatremia can be caused by excess sweating while replacing fluid lost with water alone. 10. Why don’t SaltStick products contain sea salt and trace minerals?
There are no significant trace minerals in addition to what’s listed on the labels. In terms of scientific “sweat replacement”, the trace minerals are of little importance since they are lost in trace amounts in sweat and a normal diet is usually sufficient to replace those losses. If you feel that trace minerals are important for you specifically then a product based on unrefined sea salt would likely be a better choice. However, it may lack the macro-electrolytes like potassium, magnesium and calcium that athletes lose in sweat in large amounts.

11. Why sodium citrate? What is wrong with “salt”?
Sodium citrate is a source of the important electrolyte sodium in a form that is readily available to the body, while at the same time, soothes the stomach. For individuals with sensitive stomachs, especially during intense exercise, sodium citrate is an ideal source of sodium as compared with sodium chloride (table salt). As well, sodium citrate tastes “less salty” and makes for an ideal powdered supplement to add to create a custom electrolyte beverage. It is a more expensive ingredient and therefore products with this material may cost more. Sodium citrate is one of the active ingredients in the antacid “Alka-Seltzer” and hence soothes the stomach while supplying sodium for electrolyte replacement. Also, some athletes have found that the chloride present in sodium chloride (table salt) can irritate the stomach. Both sodium chloride and sodium citrate are easily absorbed into the body.

12. Why don’t you include Ginger Root in your formulation?
Ginger root at doses of 0.5-2g per day has been inconclusively shown to have some anti-nausea and stomach-soothing effects. One study demonstrated that 0.5g-1.0g significantly aids in reduction of the severity of acute chemotherapy-induced nausea in adult cancer patients. Another study demonstrated that ginger does not possess antimotion sickness activity, nor does it significantly alter gastric function during motion sickness. Another study indicates that ginger may help “attenuate the day-to-day progression of muscle pain”. Other studies have shown consuming ginger before exercise has no impact on muscle pain, oxygen consumption and other physiological variables during or immediately after a workout, suggesting that if ginger does have any benefits, they may be limited to reductions in soreness in the days after a workout. Our suggestion is that if you feel that ginger root would be beneficial as a dietary supplement, we would suggest finding a quality ginger root supplement or to eat fresh ginger in meaningful quantities.

13. What is the calorie content of SaltStick Caps and Caps Plus?
Zero.

14. My coach told me to take x mg of salt per hour. Is that the same as sodium?
No, sodium and salt are not the same. Be sure to clarify with your coach exactly what they are suggesting. “Salt” is usually what people call sodium chloride, which is about 40% by weight sodium. This means that the 550 mg of sodium chloride in a capsule of SaltStick Caps represents an available 215 mg of elemental sodium (the rest is chloride). Other sources of sodium have different amounts of sodium by weight. For example, the 810mg of sodium citrate in SaltStick Caps Plus represents 190 mg of elemental sodium. Therefore, when you compare labels or intake goals, be sure to compare just the elemental sodium values. If a product does not report “sodium” as a stand-alone nutritional identity, you may be able to calculate the value from the ingredients. Also be sure to tell the company to get an FDA-compliant label, because all US labels need to have minerals listed individually.

15. What is bioavailability?
A nutrient’s bioavailability is the proportion of the nutrient that, when ingested, actually gets absorbed by the body. Absorption rate is important because even when a drug is absorbed completely, it may be absorbed too slowly to produce any effect. SaltStick Caps and Caps Plus contains water-soluble chelated sodium, potassium, calcium and magnesium chlorides, citrates and gluconates that have high bioavailability and fast absorption rates. This is in contrast to some supplements that use forms of these minerals that have lower bioavailability, are insoluble, or require high stomach acid to digest. 16. Why do I appear to suffer in the heat more as I get older?
Studies have shown, including PlosOne – Age-Related Decrements in Heat Dissipation during Physical Activity Occur as Early as the Age of 40 that older individuals tend to sweat less and have a more difficult time to release body heat. The general suggestion is to increase fluid consumption and reduce the amount of time spent in hot or sunny conditions. Addition of SaltStick Caps to fluid consumption will ensure that your body is provided with sufficient electrolyte replenishment under those conditions. Decrements in whole-body heat loss capacity were apparent as early as the age of 40 and declined with advancing age. The study concludes that not only should older adults be cautious of the risks associated with performing physical activity when ambient air temperature rises, but middle-aged adults should also be aware that they could be more prone to heat-related illness compared to young individuals.

17. Do SaltStick Caps help for a hangover?

3. Can I obtain a replacement parts, such as the red or yellow SaltStick dispenser nozzle?
The nozzle can sometimes come off if it is hit or sometimes even during normal wear and tear. We would like to make your dispenser whole again and offer inexpensive replacement parts, including installation washers, GRIP clips, and nozzles at ShopSaltStick.com. When replacing the nozzle, please ensure the black plastic surface onto which the nozzle installs is clean and dry. We suggest cleaning the surface of both the plastic and the vinyl with rubbing alcohol to remove any oil or dirt and to ensure the best adhesion. You may also choose to tape the nozzle in place with duct tape if you use the dispenser in harsher environments where the dispenser is subject to unusual situations.

4. My dispenser stopped working! What should I do?
First, try to diagnose what might be occurring: Could a capsule have jammed in due to water or moisture? Don’t force the mechanism, rather, remove the coloured end nozzle and clean out the tube, washing the inside with water if necessary. Be sure to allow the tube to dry in the sun before replacing the nozzle. This cleaning process usually resolves most issues if due to a blockage. If the dispenser had broken due to another issue, consider sending it back for warranty service if it qualifies.
